We saved public transit in the Bay Area! RTM passes with resounding support from voters.
Bay Area voters just made history by passing the Regional Transit Measure (RTM) and Prop H to save our public transit.
With over 1,180,000 votes cast as of November 5th, 61.8% voted yes on RTM to stop massive cuts to BART, Caltrain, Muni, AC Transit, and other transit across our region. Measure RTM passed with a majority vote in each of the 5 counties. Prop H in San Francisco to keep Muni running also passed!
The Regional Transit Measure was the biggest transit ballot measure in the United States this election cycle. Over the next 14 years, the measure will raise approximately $14 billion to prevent what would have been devastating cuts to our BART, Muni, Caltrain, AC Transit, paratransit, and other transit service across the region.
This massive victory was only possible because of the robust, diverse coalition that is the Bay Area transit movement. Thousands of people and hundreds of organizations put in the work to defend and improve transit.
If you volunteered, told your friends, voted, or donated – thank you!
This victory was not an accident. Passing these measures is the culmination of years of work put in by Seamless Bay Area, Transbay Coalition, and allies to save and improve transit. Together, we built the largest grassroots transit organizing effort the Bay Area has seen in a generation.
We organized over several years to get the major Bay Area’s agencies and local and county governments to work together on a framework for what eventually became Measure RTM.
We organized to get the bill passed that allowed for signature gathering on RTM to even be possible (SB 63).
We successfully got San Mateo County and Santa Clara County to opt-in to the Regional Ballot Measure in the first place.
We won progress on free transfers, low-income discounts, faster buses around the region, integrated signs, and coordinated paratransit to improve transit for all and give voters hope that transit is getting better. Plus we got those improvements included in RTM so they will last for another 14 years!
We collected over 77,000 signatures with over 1,000 volunteers to get RTM on the ballot.
And we phonebanked, passed out flyers, hung banners, hosted voter info sessions, and much much more to pass RTM!
But preventing drastic cuts is just the baseline. These ballot measures are just part of the work we’re putting in to make it easier for everyone to get around the Bay. In 2027 we can stand on this foundation we built to make big progress toward seamless, world-class, equitable and accessible transit.
Over the last several years, we’ve turned seamless transit from a dream to real progress, and grown a mass movement to keep transit running and make it better. Thank you in advance for your continued work to make the Bay Area an easier place for everyone to get around.
There is a lot more work in store for 2027 so please donate today to power up our work.
